how to get testimonials

Getting a great quality testimonial can positively impact your business in tremendous ways.

You gain trust, authority, likeability, and credibility with new customers and potential clients.

While this is great, the problem with many testimonials is that they are super scattered. There’s no concrete structure and people usually just say whatever they want about you, whether it’s amazing or simply okay.

A testimonial is not only about getting other to say great things about you, but also hitting the pains, problems, fears, and objections that potential buyers are thinking about.

You want your client ‘interviews’ to answer all these problems for you.

So here is how to create a great long-form testimonial that will actually help your business grow.

STEP 1: contact your top clients/customers

Find 5-10 of your top clients that you know will be willing to give you a testimonial.

These should be people that you won’t need to persuade or convince to get on a quick zoom call with you.

Reach out to them and ask for 5 minutes of their time for a video testimonial.

If they respond by telling you they will send over a video of their own, counter that by making it clear that you want them to jump on a zoom call and share a live testimonial with you.

STEP 2: check lighting and sound

Make sure your face is not in the shadows and that your sound is clear.

This sounds like an obvious step, but you’d be surprised at how often this can go wrong or is simply forgotten.

STEP 3: SET UP YOUR SCREEN CORRECTLY

Make sure your screens are set up in a way that you can see both you and the client at the same time.

I’ve found that if viewers can see both you and the client, they are more likely to trust that the testimonial is real.

STEP 4: FRAME THE TESTIMONIAL

There is a special framework/template that you should follow in order to get the most out of your testimonial. So do these things in order, and try to keep it to 5 minutes:

  1. Introduce your guest and let them explain what they do

  2. Ask them: “What was your business like, or what was happening before you worked with me?”

  3. Ask them: “What problem were you trying to solve?”

  4. Ask them: “What was the first win that you experienced working with me?”

  5. Ask them: “Was there anything that surprised you?”

  6. Ask them: “What was it like to work with me?”

  7. Ask them: “What would you say to other people that are on the fence with working with me/investing into themselves?”

  8. Have them share their own social media/contact information so that people can find them.

The secret to the testimonial is in framework. This will give a clear picture of where the client was before and after working with you.

STEP 5: UPLOAD TO YOUR WEBSITE

Be sure to upload your testimonials to your website. There’s no point of having a testimonial if you don’t share it, so don’t forget this step!

I recommend having your website page labeled as yourwebsite.com/clients or something similar.
