HOW TO DEAL WITH HATERS AFTER GETTING PR
Every person with a decent amount of publicity and PR has haters. It’s just a fact about PR, and there’s nothing you can do to avoid it. Something that’s important to understand is that along with the benefits comes resistance, and you have to learn how to deal with it in a healthy way. After being seen as a public figure for the past sixteen years, this is something that I’ve learned to deal with, and I want to help prepare you for it too. So down below I wanted to share a few ways on how to deal with haters after getting PR.
PEOPLE WILL JUDGE YOU
The moment that you put yourself in the spotlight is the moment that people will start having opinions about you. Some people will support you, yet others will try to tear you down. It’s a natural part of building a personal brand, and it’s important to grow some thick skin when it comes to this. People who are insecure will start to try to bring you down to their level in order to make themselves feel good, and you need to remember that it’s not because you’re bad, it’s because the other person is dealing with internal issues.
These people will say things like:
You suck
Your product is cheap
You’re just living off your rich dad’s money
You don’t deserve this
The difficult thing with negativity is that it’s louder than the positivity. You may get one hundred positive comments, yet the only thing that you remember is the single hateful comment. However, remember that all PR is good, no matter how many haters you get, because it means you’re getting more eyes on you and extra free publicity. I’ve come to terms with letting people say whatever they want, because that means they’re talking about me, which is better than being invisible when it comes to growing a brand.
LEARN TO LOVE REJECTION
Rejection only means that you’re getting closer to your goals. When I started my magic YouTube channel in 2011, I didn’t get lots of views. But once my videos started gaining traction, the hate comments started rolling in. The first few hurt a bit, but after a while I realized that I needed to embrace all the feedback, because that was proof that I was starting to grow.
THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER
There are three things that I try to keep in mind whenever people start hating on me or my content:
As mentioned above, if rude people start flocking towards your content, that means your stuff is good enough to attract a crowd. You’re growing and building a legacy that is impacting more people than just your support group.
2. Try to look at things from their perspective
I don’t mean to start looking at all the things you’re doing wrong. What I mean is to realize that they are coming from a place of hurt. These people that are spitting hateful words are probably operating from a place of rejection, shame, or laziness. These people are looking for someone to pour out their hate on, and it’s easy for them to get jealous of someone that is experiencing success. They are not actually hating on you, but revealing who they are inside. So it’s better to brush off their comments instead of taking them to heart.
3. Take it as encouragement that you’re on the right track
Going in hand with point #1, if you’re getting hate, that means you’re growing and starting to reach a larger audience. You will never make every person on the planet happy, and the only way to avoid conflict is to shut yourself in your bedroom and never show your face online. So remember that if you’re hitting walls, you’ve grown big enough to reach them.
YOU CANNOT BE AFRAID OF ROADBLOCKS
People that are afraid of rude comments never reach the top of the mountain. The biggest celebrities have the most haters. Does that mean they should stop? No, it just means they’re on the right track. It’s the same for anyone on the road to success. So the next time you come across something that makes you feel bad inside, take a moment to take a deep breath and remember the three points I mentioned above: this is a good thing, these people are just jealous, and you’re on the right track.
