One Thing You Should Never Post On Social Media
Social media these days can be described as chaotic and diverse. People post anything and everything that they want. This includes good memories, private moments, life accomplishments, and negative experiences. With the vast amount of content that you can be sharing online, is there anything that you shouldn’t be posting if you’re trying to grow your personal brand? The answer is absolutely yes. So down below I want to share with you one thing that you should never post on social media.
STAY AWAY FROM CONTROVERSIAL TOPICS
Controversial topics should be avoided on social media, and the reason is because they are so easily triggering. Triggering your audience is never a good idea unless you’re trying to turn them against you. Here are few examples of topics that you should avoid:
Politics
Sexuality
Religion
Strong diet beliefs
Politics is a pretty obvious topic that most people already know they need to avoid talking about. Everybody has a different value system, and by openly stating your facts and opinions about politics, you risk offending and angering people from the opposing party. It’s an easy way to lose followers fast.
Sexuality is another topic that you should avoid speaking on too much. If this is an important part of who you are, it’s okay to share about it, but avoid any strong language, opinions, or beliefs in this area because this is still considered an extremely controversial topic.
Religion can actually be used in a positive way for your personal brand. If you are of a certain religion and let your audience know that, it often brings in a stronger connection with like-minded people. However, you should avoid sharing any strong statements that will turn others away or saying anything that sounds like you are forcing your beliefs on others. Keep it simple and mostly private.
The topic of diets can also be a tricky one, mostly when it comes to eating meat versus not eating meat. This is an area that most people have a very strong opinion about, and it’s important not to force those opinions on the public. Don’t ever say things like, ‘If you eat meat, don’t talk to me.” Or, “If you don’t eat meat, I don’t want you in my house.” Saying stuff like this can be extremely rude and turn away a good portion of your audience.
PART OF GROWING A PERSONAL BRAND IS BEING SMART ABOUT YOUR OPINIONS
Because people tend to see things from their own perspective, you can’t rely on them to be accepting and open to your controversial statements. Instead of starting fights and arguing online, be smart about your opinions. Yes, it’s important to share them, but do it in a way that doesn’t trigger half of your audience.
PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU LOOK IN THE PUBLIC
Even if you think you’re not being triggering, imagine that a person who doesn’t know you comes across your page. What is the first thing they see? Is it a video where you talk about why one president sucks or another is amazing? Or maybe a caption about how much you hate vegetarian food? What kind of impression are you making at that moment? Whether this person agrees with you or not, they may be turned away because of how narrow-minded you might be coming across as. Being too controversial can really harm the relationships and trust that you have with your audience.
DON’T TRIGGER YOUR FOLLOWERS
You might feel like you’re not being controversial, but people usually interpret things a lot more strongly than you might intend for it to be. If you’re not sure, simply ask a few friends or family members the honest truth. Or you can just avoid posting anything you feel might not be the best thing to say. People in general aren’t great at controlling their emotions, so avoid making people feel negative things towards you. Most people think that any type of attention is good attention, but that's not the point. Your audience needs to listen to you, and to listen to you they need to like and trust you. You can’t do that if you say rude, triggering, or controversial words.
SHARE POSITIVITY
Instead, share something good. If you want to talk about politics, write about something good that the government has done lately. Or if you want to share about religion, share a positive story from your religious books or texts. Leading into specific PR-related content, sharing positive PR content about yourself is a great, positive topic to be posting about. If you’re looking for content that will build your authority, make you trustworthy, and in the end bring you more clients, consider investing into your brand image.
